Adaptable Homes is a research project by Fragile and Knauf in collaboration with FRAME magazine. It aims to collect insights on how our homes can become adaptable to changing needs and lifestyles. The project strives to inspire tomorrow’s housing concepts that pave the way for a new generation of adaptable living spaces.
Challenge
Home owners have long been accustomed to static, predefined floor plans and room layouts. Now, it’s time that our homes become open and responsive for our individual needs, reflecting the lives we want to live.
We were tasked to translate this idea of the home as a flexible framework into an engaging, easy to use web experience that invites visitors to co-shape a new generation of homes that change, grow and evolve with them.
Solution
We’ve crafted a responsive, no-scroll interface that let’s the content take centre stage. The website’s overall reduced visual language strongly focuses on usability, while the usage of illustrations and bold colours punctuate important moments within the journey and interface.
Wanting to reflect the endless possibilities of an adaptable home, we take the user on an interactive journey that explores different living constellations and stories around our individual needs.
The chapter overview screen functions as the home from where the user can freely navigate themselves through the survey. The research is conducted in a non-linear manner that allows them to jump in and out of chapters, making the experience feel lighter and less exhausting.
To create realistic expectation around the extent of the survey and to avoid the feeling of endlessness, it was important to clearly visually communicate how far the user has progressed within each chapter at any time.
Through the use of subtle animations we’ve created a feeling of modularity and progress that implies that the website is never static but always in motion - being co-shaped by residents from around the world.
